PLAYS

A Successful and Produced Playwright

In the past decade, five of my plays have been world premieres. I am incredibly grateful. Let's put things in perspective. I am one working playwright. Among many. In 2016, there are about fifteen to twenty-five thousand working playwrights in the United States. On the average, I will create one new play a year. My guess is, so will most of those other playwrights. Together, we will likely introduce 20,000 new plays into a nation only capable of producing 2,000 new plays per year.  What this means is ninety percent of all new work will NEVER be produced. Since only one out of ten plays will ever make it to the stage, any playwright can reasonably expect to receive one world premiere per decade. So, when you consider these facts, I have to consider myself a successful and produced playwright. Even so, please don't misunderstand me: I don't think of myself as a genius; most of my plays fall within the ninety percent. But knowing I can birth just one creative and original play some might consider to be scintillating or of exceptional intellect fuels my passion to write each new play better than my last so it will become worthy of the ten. What an honor and privilege it is to write for audiences like yours.
