HARTLEY WRITES

As the Fall season arrives and leads us into the year-end holidays, I will be concentrating most on revisions and the polishing of work that has come short of reaching the stage, barely survived the stage, or really needs to land on one. Additionally, I am pleased and honored to accept the invitation of a colleague to help launch a new dramatists platform offering regular public performances of polished plays, poetry and dramatic readings. It is my intention to present some of the material I am currently working on at a performance in this setting prior to the end of this year (2008).

I am revising short in-the-works plays entitled “Masks” and “Faded Jeans.” These both received cold-readings at workshops in early September and might be included as constructive revisions for the aforementioned performance in the months to follow. I originally wrote Faded Jeans as a teleplay, but am now expanding the idea and re-crafting it for the stage. Other works I hope to iron-out this fall include With or Without, Shuttering Star and Ricochet. These are all short pieces, but in some regard I am keeping my options open for new material that might come about. Additionally, I am researching a lot of material for a devotional work (not intended for the stage) based on the Biblical book of Ruth—and will be busy each week studying and presenting material for a small group spiritual leadership study.

I have temporarily abandoned, “Tiny,” a full-length play about two sisters who have a mutual, homicidal friend. That will probably stay on the shelf until after the re-release of the long-awaitedVictims of Grace,” and the debut (finally) of “Threats and Confessions in the Gallery of Cows.” Frequent visitors of this site have been hearing about these two plays for about three years now and might wonder if I have even written one line of dialogue. Of course, I have.
